Malaysia with Kids: The Destination That Surprised Me Most

When people think of family holidays in Asia, places like Bali, Thailand and Japan usually steal the spotlight. But after recently travelling through Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru with my two kids, I honestly think Malaysia deserves a place right at the top of the list.

One thing became clear almost immediately. Malaysia is made for families.

Every day felt easy. And as any parent knows, when travel feels easy, everyone has a better holiday.

What I loved most was that entertainment wasn't something we had to constantly search for. It was everywhere.

We wandered into pet stores where the kids could see lizards and even pat a snake completely free of charge. Shopping centres weren't just somewhere to escape the heat, they became destinations in themselves with indoor theme parks, cinemas, giant playgrounds, arcades and activities around almost every corner.

If the weather turned or the kids needed a break, there was always somewhere exciting nearby.

Getting around was just as easy. Public transport is clean, affordable and simple to navigate, even with little ones in tow. Whether you're hopping on the MRT around Kuala Lumpur or catching a Grab between attractions, everything felt incredibly accessible.

And yes, it's warm... but Malaysia has mastered air conditioning! Shopping centres, restaurants, transport and attractions all provide a welcome escape from the tropical heat, making sightseeing comfortable all day long.

Then there's the food.

Malaysia is a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, and that means every meal is an experience. From sizzling satay and fragrant curries to handmade noodles, fluffy roti and incredible street food, there really is something for everyone. Even my two found plenty they loved, while I enjoyed stepping outside my comfort zone.

What surprised me most, though, was just how welcoming Malaysia felt. Families aren't treated as an inconvenience here, they're simply part of everyday life. Kids are genuinely welcomed, and you notice it everywhere you go.

But here's the thing. Malaysia isn't just a fantastic destination for families. It's a destination for everyone.

If you're chasing white sand beaches, you'll find them. Dreaming of tropical islands? Malaysia has plenty. Love bustling cities? Kuala Lumpur is vibrant, modern and full of surprises. Prefer waterfalls, rainforests and jungle adventures? They're all here too. Whether you're travelling as a couple, with friends, solo or with little ones, Malaysia offers an incredible mix of experiences that few destinations can match.

Even better, you can now fly direct from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur every day, making it one of the easiest Asian destinations to reach.

Sometimes the best holidays aren't the ones everyone is talking about. They're the destinations that quietly exceed every expectation.

For us, Malaysia did exactly that, and I already can't wait to go back.

If Malaysia has been sitting quietly on your travel wish list, this is your sign to move it to the top. I'd love to help you plan an itinerary that's perfectly tailored to you, whether that's a family adventure, a romantic escape, a foodie holiday or a mix of city, jungle and island life. Because one thing's for sure: Malaysia really does have it all..
